Google...I Mean God.

Blog: http://mvbatiste.wordpress.com/

Before I start, let me ask you a simple question? How much do you Google? Personally, I Google everyday; I Google everything from the weather to finding clothes. You name it, I Google it. The blog that I have chosen to read and write a response to is called “The Supreme Marketing”-A reference from God, by Mike Batiste. The blog was written in reference to how people use Google, like God. Actually when you think about it, more people go to Google than to church these days. Everything you ever needed to know or cared to know is on Google. We live in a Google society. Google has all the information you ever wanted to know about and then some. It is a gateway to all access information.
In the article, Batiste comments on how people don’t turn to their faith or church anymore to find directions, they turn to Google. And when you think about that it’s actually true. When you need to know something about your health or how to do something, where do we turn? Google. Google has become a portal way of like. People are thinking that Google is the internet and that there are no other ways of finding information. How many times does someone ask you a question, and you simple say “I don’t know, Google it.” People are beginning to become memorized by Google.
Honestly, when you think about it. Google is on to something. We live in a society where everything is fast passed and we live for the moment. We want to know answers now; we don’t want to wait 2 weeks for a phone call back or a test result. And Google makes that happen. We can Google everything, and in 5 seconds know the answer. Where else can you do that? There is other websites out there, but Google has made it almost impossible to compete with. And now with the popular demand in Blackberry’s and iPhones, Google is mobile. Now with T-Mobile making Google have its own phone, we can finally take Google with us everywhere we wanted. Let’s face it, Google is at the palm of our hands.
Google is taking over our internet and search habits. But are we going to try and fight it? Of course not, because we would have to Google the answer to see how to stop it.
(I do not want people to think I am trying to say Google will take the place of God, because it won't, but I am using God as a reference.)

  1. I agree with the author of this article and Kathleen about Google taking over. Everybody uses google because its easy and it provides any information in the world from how to make a recipe to finding the cheapest winter clothes. I agree with your opinion on how Google is popular with our society because we live a fast paced life and want everything at the tip of our fingers and google can do that for us. We can find anything you want in the matter of seconds.

I disagree with the author when he talks about people turning to Google more then God. Google is just a search engine, it will never replace God. Yes, it does help us with a lot, but I think comparing the two just makes the author seem out of his mind!

  2. I would say that I am a victim of using Google every day for just about anything. It's fast and easy and gives us results with just a few clicks, whether or not the information is true or not, we tend to believe it, because hey, it's Google. "Just Google it" has come out of my mouth multiple times and now looking back on it, it is pretty pathetic how much I rely on Google. I understood the Google... I mean God line and didn't think you were using it to replace God in any way so no harm done.

All in all people, including myself need to start looking to other information sources other than Google. I will be the first to say that I can't make any promises but I am going to try!

  3. Haha. I love this, becuase I say "google it", all the time! and google everthing. Anything from how to use tools in word, cook, clean something, when I don't know about a product and yupp you name it I probably google. But I'm not sure about this whole God thing? its scary to think of it in that way, but I can see why he says so. I for one do not believe people look to google as a type if God, it's just the number one thing we all think of to use for everything because that's how we were trained. Most search engines on Internet Explorer have Google as the homepage. There is no way I look to Google as a god and answer all my problems and no I don't think because of this author I will change my "googling" ways.

  4. This is sooo very true. I legit google everything, from medical questions to song lyrics. I never even thought about that, I don't go to church and instead of looking to god for the answers I simply just ask google for them. God just doesn't always have the answers, especially if it comes down to I want to know starred in the latest movie I just saw. I understand you aren't saying Google is kicking God out of heaven, but it is kinda interesting to look at it in this way.

  5. It's a scary thought that touches upon the scarier reality that we are moving towards integrating technology from simply being a part of the digital world to becoming intertwined with the physical world. You're correct, sadly, in stating that more people turn to Google for their personal problems than their faith. The reason is our need for immediacy. We talk about it all of the time, "If I can't find a song for free I'll download it illegally (steal it) from somewhere".

I don't feel, to quote Erin, that, "God just doesn't always have the answers,..". I do agree, however, that if I wanted to check the scores to the latest game or find out what band is playing at Toad's, Im not going to pray about it, but Google can't foster the spiritual fulfillment of faith.

Faith isn't about finding answers. The old cliche' "God works in mysterious ways" tells us that. It's called Faith for a reason; acknowledging that we may not always get the answers we seek, but must trust in our higher power that we are being looked after, short term and long-run, regardless of what the first hit on Google says about our love life or life-threatening disease. Google fulfills our impatient need for answers, but it will never fill the God-shaped void in many of our chests that we try an stuff with materialize things or the love of another. Take that Google. You're no god to me.

  6. Like you started off in this response I do Google a lot, possibly over 10 times a day when I'm accessible to a computer. In this generation we do not have to look up things in library's or bookstores, we have answers convienently at our fingertips by the click of a mouse. I'm religous and I think it's rediculous for the author to suggest that Google is taking over God. It's completely different and non-comparable situation. But anywho, I do agree with Steve and Erin that "God just doesn't always have the answers" meaning I wouldn't ask God how to make guacamole, thats a Google answer.

  7. I agree that people use google more than go to the library or other resources to find their information. My mom has always told me to always second guess any information that I read when I try to find answers online. Anyone can put whatever they want on the internet and Google can send you to fake sites that will give you fake answers. Maybe my mom drilling this into my head makes me less prone to use Google as much as other people. I'll use it for a general reference to lead me into the direction of the answer I need, but the credentials of the site is what I look at. I think people need to realize that Google doesn't have all the answers an that they need.
